Senator Dick Durbin’s Support of the FIRST STEP Is A Game Changer
Statement from Jessica Jackson Sloan, National Director of #cut50, in response to Senator Dick Durbin’s support of FIRST STEP Act
Washington D.C-- “This is a huge breakthrough. The FIRST STEP Act and the added sentencing reform provisions are the result of a years-long effort by grassroots groups, formerly incarcerated people, and tens of thousands of #cut50 supporters pushing Members of Congress from both parties.
We are excited to see Senator Durbin’s crucial endorsement today. We encourage other Democrats and Republicans to join him, Chairman Grassley, and Senators Whitehouse and Cornyn in supporting this bill.
Given that the bill now has strong support from leadership in both parties - and the endorsement of the President - Senate Majority Leader McConnell should waste no time in scheduling a floor vote.
Both parties can score a win by showing that they are able to tackle a deeply entrenched problem that has gone unsolved for too long. Our federal prison system is in disarray and we send far too many people into incarceration for far too long, destroying too many families. The FIRST STEP Act will help keep our communities safe, restore fairness to the system, and give people an opportunity to redeem themselves and rebuild their lives with the tools they need to come home job ready.
When we come together, miracles can happen.
#cut50 works to cut crime and incarceration in all 50 states by translating local needs into smart safety solutions. The organization brings together unlikely allies—formerly and currently incarcerated individuals, community members, crime survivors, local elected officials, and law enforcement--to keep communities safe and families together.
