Right now, we have an opportunity to fix one of the biggest moral crises of our time.
1 out of every 100 Americans is behind bars. The U.S. spends $80 billion a year on incarceration. 70 million Americans have a criminal record. In too many neighborhoods, young people of color are more like to go to prison than college.
This is a pivotal moment. People on both sides of the aisle know we cannot continue to incarcerate more people per capita than any other country in the world.
Despite all the agreement, all the evidence, all the popularity and all the urgency, Congress has failed to pass comprehensive criminal justice reforms.
We must work together to rectify the damage caused by excessive incarceration and pursue policies have been shown to preserve public safety for all Americans. This critical moment is a once-in-a generation challenge to save entire communities and transform millions of lives. We must not let it pass.
Together, we must push Congress to pass major legislation this year.
