“Let Innovation Beat Incarceration”

To make transformative progress, we will need new leaders, new tactics, and new partnerships. #cut50’s “Innovation” Pillar will work with leading academics, technologists, and private sector leaders to identify breakthrough campaigns and opportunities.

Second Chance Summits

In the United States, currently 3 out of 4 individuals return to jail after being released from prison. This 75% recidivism rate is drastically high when compared with other industrialized nations - for example, Norway’s citizens re-offend at a 25% rate. Many organizations across the political spectrum support re-entry, including the American Enterprise Institute, ALEC and others.

In December, 2016, #cut50 co-hosted the Second Chance Summit in San Francisco, CA - keynoted by Van Jones. In close partnership with Dave’s Killer Bread, #cut50 convened over 150 local Bay Area employers and stakeholders to discuss second chance employment for formerly incarcerated individuals. At the summit, interested employers connected to a network of like-minded industry leaders and worked to develop solutions within the private sector for returning citizens. We plan to host additional convenings and amplify content and educational opportunities that call on companies to step up and reduce barriers to employment for individuals with a criminal history.
