#ClemencyNOW is a new campaign urging President Obama to fulfill a promise he made to grant clemency to thousands of people languishing in federal prison for nonviolent drug offenses.
We have people serving life sentences for non-violent drug offenses - a living death sentence! This kind of punishment is unconscionable. Without President Obama, they will die in prison.
Join us in Washington D.C. on November 14th & 15th for a series of activities and events in solidarity with family members of those seeking clemency.
THE PRESIDENT MADE A PROMISE:
In 2014, the President directed the Department of Justice to prioritize clemency applications from nonviolent drug offenders who have been in prison at least 10 years; have not committed violent crimes; and have no significant history of criminal activity.
The initiative has granted more clemencies than the past 9 presidents combined, to a total of 944 deserving people, including 324 who were serving life sentences. But thousands more may fit the criteria. And for them, time is running out.
WE ARE ASKING THE PRESIDENT TO FULFILL HIS PROMISE AND ENSURE NO ELIGIBLE PERSON IS LEFT BEHIND BARS WHEN HE LEAVES OFFICE.
We need a massive groundswell of support—criminal justice reform advocates, clemency applicants and their families, formerly incarcerated people including clemency grantees, influencers, artists, athletes—to wake up the consciousness of this country and persuade the President to continue to grant clemency in a momentous and encouraging manner.
The clemency criteria is already very narrow. It would be a tragedy if this important and well-intentioned effort came up short. We call upon President Obama to adjust and accelerate the strategy to ensure he can deliver.
